The Greenville Tigers hosted Wetumpka for the first game of their 2016-2017 basketball season last Monday.

The varsity Tigers, coached by first year head coach Stu Stuedeman, defeated the Indians 75-66 starting their season 1-0.

Leading scorers for the Tigers were Charles Warren with 17-points and Jeremiah Owens with 15-points and 7-rebounds.

The Tigers had 18-assists on 25-baskets made and their full court pressure defense produced 12-steals. Greenville also played close to the basket on offense and recovered 19-offensive rebounds.

“I feel like we did pretty well considering it was the first game of the year and the first time we have played someone other than ourselves,” said Coach Stuedeman. “We obviously have a long way to go but I was really proud of how we battled through adversity with foul trouble in the first half and how we kept grinding the whole game and finally wore them down and pulled away.”

The junior varsity Tigers also pulled out a win over the Indians with a final score of 57-30. Javion Posey led the team with 14-points followed by Jadakiss Anderson with 12.

Junior varsity head coach Marcus Mickles said the team started slow, but that was expected.

“This was the first time many of these boys played high school basketball,” said Coach Mickles. “They came out really strong in the second half and dominated the opposing team scoring 42-points in the second half. We have a lot of potential and the sky is the limit for this group of young guys.”

Coach Mickles is also the head coach for the Lady Tigers, who fell to the Indians 62-55. “I was really pleased with their performance even though we did not come out on the winning side,” said Coach Mickles. “We showed a tremendous amount of effort and heart through the game and when things got tough, they continued to battle back and fight.”

Adrienna Taylor led the Lady Tigers in points with 17-points. She was followed by Destinee Smith with 12 and Tankeya Smith with 10-points and 7-rebounds.

“Our crowd was great,” said Coach Stuedeman. “We appreciate them coming out and I hope they were entertained.”

All three Tigers teams traveled to Hillcrest-Evergreen last night and will travel to Andalusia tomorrow night and Luverne Friday night. Tip off times are junior varsity at 4:30, Lady Tigers at 6:00 and varsity Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
