Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Faye Kennedy Mathews; son, Bruce A Mathews; brothers, Donald (Frances) Mathews, Dale (Brenda) Mathews, David (Hazel) Mathews, and Larry (Joann) Mathews; uncle, Obie (Joyce) Heath; aunt, Elise Heath; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tom was born and raised in the Friendship Community of Georgiana. Following graduation at Georgiana High School, Tom began work with ACME which later became Rheem Manufacturing Company in Greenville. He retired from Rheem as a Production Supervisor following 36 years. He then worked six years as a project engineer with Siemens Building Technologies in Pelham.
Tom was born with a natural curiosity for “tinkering” and discovering how things worked; tearing apart the old and bringing it to life again. Tom was a natural problem-solver and thrived on mechanical challenges. He was a self-made engineer.
Tom’s life was filled with a love of work and keeping busy. He enjoyed helping, visiting and sharing with others through his family, community and church involvement over the years.
Tom loved and preferred life in the outdoors. He enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting, fishing and Alabama football.
