ALBERTA GOMILLION CHILDS

Jan. 16 1928 – Aug. 18, 2022

Alberta “Abbie” Gomillion Childs, a resident of the Davenport community, passed away on Aug. 18, 2022 at the age of 94. A memorial service for Abbie will be on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 4450 West Hickory Grove Road in Letohatchee. Family visitation will start at 2 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 3 p.m.

Abbie, the daughter of Albert and Effie Mitchell Gomillion, was born on Jan. 16, 1928 in McKenzie. After graduating from Greenville High School, she married Robert E. “Bob” Childs of Greenville and together they raised a loving family.

The Childs family moved to Marion, Alabama in 1964 and became a loving part of the Marion/Marion Military Institute community. Abbie and Bob moved back to Fort Deposit area in 1977 and later bought a farm in the Davenport community, their home for the rest of their lives.

Abbie was a gentle, caring woman and a loving mother, grandmother, sister-in-law and aunt who was cherished by her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenville, Marion United Methodist Church, and later Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church where she served on various committees.

After the passing of her husband in 1986, Abbie lovingly provided beautiful fresh flower arrangements in the vestibule of their church in his memory until she was no longer able to do so. She loved the outdoors, flowers, and all animals, especially her dogs, and very much enjoyed playing golf and bridge with her friends.

Abbie is survived by three sons, Robby (Cindy) Childs of Daphne, Mike (Jill) Childs of Daphne, and Randy (Lynn) Childs of Davenport; one daughter, Phyllis (Tommy) Gamble of Davenport; four grandsons, Jaan Childs, Zach (Robin) Childs, Rush (Sara) Childs, and Conner Childs; and three granddaughters, Tasha Watson, Rochelle (Jay) Vehmeier, and Lauren (Cody) Foran.  She also is survived by her eight great-grandchildren, Rylee and Owen Watson, Lyric and Nolan Childs, Abbie and Emaline Childs, and James and Harris Vehmeier, and by her extended family members.

Preceding Abbie in death were her husband, Robert Ellison Childs; her parents, Albert and Effie Gomillion; her brother, James Gomillion; and her sisters, Bertha Griggers and Earsie Miller.

The family would like to thank Abbie’s loving and dedicated caregivers for their devotion to her in her final years, in particular Yolanda McQueen and Felicia “Diane” Thornton, and her hospice nurses, Cynthia Allen and Nancie Little. They would also like to thank the staff of Crowne Health Care of Greenville, who provided Abbie with care in her final months.

Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made to Enhabit Hospice Care of Greenville or Mt. Carmel Methodist Church.
