RMCCA seeks strategic transition to Rural Emergency Hospital

GREENVILLE, Ala. — Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama will file an application with the State Health Planning and Development Agency to convert RMCCA into a rural emergency hospital.

This strategic decision — unanimously approved by the RMCCA Board — represents the hospital’s best opportunity to achieve financial stability and continue serving the healthcare needs of the Greenville community.

“As rural hospitals across the country face unprecedented financial challenges, RMCCA is taking this proactive step to preserve a needed presence in our community, and maintaining essential healthcare services for our region is paramount,” said Patrick Trammell, CEO of RMCCA. “The decision to pursue Rural Emergency Hospital status and end inpatient services was not made lightly, but it is necessary and reflects our commitment to adapt and sustain essential services for the people who depend on us.”

RMCCA will submit its application to SHPDA Nov. 13, and the hospital has started the process of restructuring in accordance with Rural Emergency Hospital guidelines.

As part of this transition, RMCCA will reduce staffing by roughly 90 employees across various departments. This reorganization is necessary to align operations with the Rural Emergency Hospital model and ensure long-term sustainability.

“While we are deeply grateful for the dedication and service of our team members, I am sorry to say that a reduction in our workforce is necessary in this transition,” Trammell said. “We are working closely with healthcare partners — including Baptist Health Montgomery — to help connect displaced employees with potential opportunities where possible. Moving forward, our focus will be supporting our employees and delivering high-quality care for our patients.”

Patients should continue to seek services at RMCCA as they normally would through the end of 2025 and until the transition to a Rural Emergency Hospital is complete in early 2026. Updates and additional details will be shared with the community.
