Wilcox County destinations ‘Best of Bama’
SPECIAL TO THE STANDARD
Two Wilcox County organizations have once again received statewide recognition by readers in Alabama Magazine’s prestigious 2026 Best of Bama Awards, highlighting the region’s growing reputation as one of Alabama’s premier destinations for history, heritage tourism, and antiques.
The Wilcox Historical Society was named Best of Bama for Heritage Tours in the magazine’s Arts & Entertainment Awards, while The Brittany House Antiques in Oak Hill earned top honors as Best Antique Shop.
For the Wilcox Historical Society, the 2026 award marks its fourth Best of Bama recognition, following previous wins in 2020, 2022, and 2025.
Known for its nationally recognized Tours of Homes and historic preservation efforts, the Society has introduced thousands of visitors to the historic communities of Camden, Furman, Pine Apple, and Oak Hill through tours, educational programs, publications, and preservation projects.
The organization is perhaps best known for its annual Tours of Homes, which attract visitors from across Alabama, the Southeast, and beyond to experience Wilcox County’s remarkable collection of historic homes, churches, cemeteries, and cultural landmarks.
In recent years, the Society has expanded its preservation efforts to include projects such as the restoration planning for the historic Wilcox Female Institute in Camden, heritage travel opportunities, and programs connected to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.
“We are honored by this recognition and grateful to our members, volunteers, homeowners, sponsors, and visitors who make our work possible,” Society leaders said. “This award belongs to everyone who helps us preserve and share the history of Wilcox County.”
Joining the Society among this year’s winners is The Brittany House Antiques in Oak Hill, owned by Lance Britt, which was recognized as Alabama’s Best Antique Shop for 2026.
The award marks the third Best of Bama honor for The Brittany House, which also received the distinction in 2022 and 2024.
Located just west of Greenville in historic Oak Hill, The Brittany House Antiques has become a destination for collectors, designers, and antique enthusiasts throughout the Southeast. The shop specializes in exceptional antiques, fine furnishings, and decorative arts and has developed a reputation for its carefully curated collections and museum-quality pieces.
Together, the awards reflect the rich history and cultural heritage found throughout Alabama’s Black Belt and reinforce Wilcox County’s growing reputation as a destination for heritage tourism and antiques.
For residents of Butler County and surrounding communities, these award-winning destinations are only a short drive away and offer opportunities to experience some of Alabama’s finest historic homes, collections, and stories close to home.
As Alabama prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, organizations such as the Wilcox Historical Society and The Brittany House Antiques continue to preserve and promote the history and traditions that define the region.
