GCS names camellia for Gov. Ivey

The Greenville Camellia Society (GCS) is pleased to announce they have named a seedling in honor of the Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama.

This is a project the Society has been working on for several months and they are very proud of this accomplishment.

The American Camellia Society judge committee just approved a camellia, which was grown from a seedling from Pat Johnson’s camellia garden in Cairo, Ga.

This is the second camellia named for an Alabama Governor.  The first one was named Alabama’s Lurleen for Governor Lurleen B. Wallace.

The Alabama’s Lurleen was propagated in Greenville and registered by local camellia enthusiast, Mr. Henry W. Steindorff, in 1968.

“Having the privilege of naming a camellia after Governor Ivey is such an exciting event for our Greenville Camellia Society,” said Jan Newton, President of the GCS.

She added, “We look forward to bringing this plant to Greenville to add to our historical camellia gardens.”

The American Camellia Society registered Governor Kay Ivey camellia will be presented to the Governor in the near future.
