President Donald Trump on Friday signed “Lulu’s Law,” which would establish a system to issue a public notice to cellphones when there’s been a shark attack nearby.
For those who don’t know, Mountain Brook Alabama native Lulu Gribbin was attacked by a shark on June 7, 2024, who lost her hand and part of her leg in a shark attack off the coast of Florida sustaining nearly fatal injuries.
Tragically, another woman had been attacked just 90 minutes earlier and just a few miles away.
The bill, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., is named after teenager Lulu Gribbin, who was one of three people bitten by a shark in a string of attacks off the Florida panhandle last year.
Two years of pushing legislation get this law passed that uses emergency alert system to keep American families and beachgoers safe Under Lulu’s Law, shark attacks will be codified as events for which wireless emergency alerts (WEAs) may be transmitted, similar to AMBER Alerts, so beachgoers can be warned of unsafe water conditions.
Senator Katie Britt said, “This bipartisan legislation is an example of Congress at its very best.”
Lulu Gribbin is also launching the Lulu Strong Foundation to support amputees and expand access to cutting-edge treatments, including virtual reality technology aimed at easing phantom limb pain.
“We feel like the virtual reality for the leg would help other amputees, so really more innovation and research within technology for the amputee space,” Blair Gribbin said. “Lulu had such a different experience than most do. So, we want to take that to others. For Lulu, her strength comes from faith and family.”
