CECIL BETTERTON
April 19, 1928 – July 6, 2026
Cecil “Bud” Betterton, age 98, a resident of Georgiana, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026. Bud was blessed with 98 years, and during those years he built a life centered on hard work, family, community, and the simple things that brought him joy.
For many people, Bud wasn’t just a neighbor or a friend- he was the familiar face behind Bud’s Grocery. Bud and Nell’s country store was more than just a place to buy milk or bread. It was a gathering place where people stopped to visit, catch up on the news, share a laugh, and enjoy Bud’s company. Through that little store, he became a part of so many people’s lives, and it’s one of the reasons so many people have such fond memories of him.
Bud was the happiest when he was busy. He loved feeding his cows and turkeys and took pride in caring for them every day. He enjoyed fishing, where he could relax and appreciate the peace and beauty around him.
And if it was Saturday night, chances are you knew exactly where to find him- at the races. He looked forward to those nights and enjoyed the excitement and the friendships that came with them. Those simple traditions became the part of the life he loved.
Bud’s life reminds us that a person doesn’t have to seek the spotlight to make a lasting difference. He made a difference through kindness, consistency, hard work, and being someone, others could count on. Whether you knew him through his store, around the community, at the racetrack, or as a friend or family member, you knew someone who lived with quiet strength and genuine care for others.
We are grateful for the gift of Bud’s 98 years. We are grateful for his example, for the memories he leaves behind, and for the love he shared so freely. Though we will miss him dearly, his legacy lives on in the family he loved, the friends, he cherished, and the community he helped build one conversation, one act of kindness, and one customer at a time.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, July 9, beginning at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Harvill officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Georgiana, with Johnson Funeral Home directing. The family received friends for visitation starting at 2 p.m. until service time.
Bud is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Frank and Lula Mae Betterton; sisters, Nell Scruggs, Grace Holley, Doris Cooper, Ethel Morton, Elmira Thomas, and Salibel Sanford; and brothers, John Betterton and Revell Betterton.
Mr. Bud is survived by his brother, W. F. Betterton, Jr. (Jeanette) and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Georgiana Health and Rehab for all the years of care and friendship.
Bud, Thank You for a life well lived. Thank You for your kindness, your hard work, your laughter, and your friendship. You will always be remembered, always be loved, and forever missed.
