Although Georgiana and McKenzie did not have games this week, this did not keep the teams from hitting the field and preparing for the next step of their seasons.
Georgiana (10-0, 6-0) finished first seed in 1A Region 2 and McKenzie (7-3, 4-2) finished third in the same region. Both teams will continue their season in the first round of playoffs this Friday night.
Georgiana Head Coach Ezell Powell said their team focused on themselves this week. “We were not one hundred percent sure what our opposing team would bring to the field,” said Coach Powell. “So we have been focusing on trying to improve on what we do to make sure we execute during the game.”
“At this stage of the game, you have to be good,” said Coach Powell. “We have to make sure we are blocking on offense so we can execute plays and tackling on defense.”
Coach Powell is relying on the Panthers solid defense and running of the ball to be their success on the field. “We also have to do our best at executing the pass.”
The McKenzie Tigers practiced three days last week to work on their game plan as well.
“We have to get better,” said Coach Tony Norris. “We have been working on improving on the mistakes we have been making all season long.”
“We have to be disciplined on both sides of the ball,” said Coach Norris. “We have to know what we are doing on defense and make sure to make the big plays. On offense, we have to move the ball and make sure we are getting the ball in the hands of those who can make the plays for us.”
McKenzie will travel to Sweet Water (7-2, 6-1) on Friday night for the first round of the playoffs. “Sweet Water is pretty good on offense,” said Coach Norris. “We have to make sure we stop them and control their playmakers.”
Georgiana will host Millry (4-6, 4-3) Friday night in Georgiana. Both games have a 7 pm kickoff.
