ARTHUR LLOYD KILLOUGH, JR.
March 17, 1942 – Sept. 12, 2024
On Sept. 12, 2024, Arthur Lloyd “Rock” Killough, Jr., passed away at his home in the Asbury community.
Since the announcement of his passing was made public, tributes have flooded social, print and broadcast media.
Originally from Greenville, Rock was a proud veteran of the United States Army. Upon discharge he attended both The University of Alabama and Auburn University, but couldn’t quench the fire in his veins…his music. He crafted songs for some of country music’s very best: The Oak Ridge Boys, Jerry Reed, Hank Snow, Merle Haggard, Sammy Kershaw, Hank Williams, Jr., Randy Travis, Brenda Lee, and many more. Also, in 2022, Rock published a collection of short stories and devotions inspired by the beautiful views and his musings from his front porch in Asbury.
Rock follows his parents, Arthur Lloyd Killough, Sr., and Lerline Phelps Killough, and his brother, Dr. William G. Killough.
He is survived by one sister, Ida Glynn Killough McQueen, six nieces, two nephews, and his beloved canine companion, Tater.
If you would like to honor Rock, find a porch made for sitting, pour a glass of tea, and listen… REALLY listen to one of his ballads. It might be the best thing you do all day.
“The churches are empty,
the jails are all full.
It’s over our own eyes we’re
pulling the wool.
Making us blind to decay from within
Where misguided values and
Greed are no sin….
-“The Absence of Love”
by Rock Killough
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
