Butler County started with four teams in the playoffs but after week one, there remains three.
The Greenville High School Tigers made the long trip north to Lineville and faced the juggernaut of Central Clay County Volunteers who entered the game with a record of 10-0.
It turned into a blowout very quickly with the Tigers falling behind 37-0 by halftime. The second half did not fare much better and the final score wound up 49-0.
Greenville finished the year with a 6-5 record which was a great improvement from the previous two years where they only had one win.
The Fort Dale Academy Eagles hosted the Valiant Cross Academy Warriors who entered the game with a 4-4 record.
A strong defensive effort carried the Eagles to a 21-8 victory and a 9-2 record. They will next host the 5-5 Bessemer Academy Rebels this coming Thursday.
The Eagles should win this game by playing in their own nest as the Rebels defense is rather porous.
A comparison of scoring shows an edge for the Eagles. In total, the Eagles scored 285 points while giving up 164 while the Rebels scored 260 and allowed 237. The prediction is an Eagle win 28-12.
The Georgiana Panthers traveled to face the Autauga Academy Generals and brought home a hard earned 40-32 win.
This puts the Panthers at 7-4 before their next game this Friday at home against the Leroy Bears who are 10-1 after defeating Pickens Academy 43-20.
This will prove to be tough scratching contest for the Panthers. While the Panthers have outscored their opponents 376-235, the Bears have a strong defense as confirmed by outscoring their opponents 346-142.
If the Panthers put together a complete game, they have decent chance, but the prediction is the Bears win 28-20.
The McKenzie Tigers are the final Butler County team to advance in the playoffs and this week’s Golden Football winner. They hosted the Keith Bears last Friday and celebrated a huge win 50-6, giving them a 10-1 record for the year.
They will travel and face the 7-4 Wildcats of Millry this Friday. It should prove to be a closer contest than many of the games the Tigers enjoyed this year.
McKenzie has outscored its opponents 523-234 but Millry’s defense is stout as shown by their record of 422-125.
If McKenzie’s offense is clicking on all cylinders and their defense plays stout, they should win 35-28.
