Officers’ shooting leaves local dead

Regarding the recent officers’ involved shooting death of Gray McNeil Vinson on May 11, Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn issued the following press release on May 12.
“On May 11, 2026 around 9:15pm, officers were dispatched to Gravel Hill Road in Greenville regarding shots fired in the area. Officers arrived in the area and confronted an individual believed to be the shooter. The officers then observed a handgun in his possession and demanded he drop the gun.
“The individual then raised the gun up at the officers and the officers then opened fire on the individual stricking him and fatally injuring him.
“Officers immediately tried to render first aid and summoned medical assistance to the scene. All attempts to save the individual from his wounds were unsuccessful and he was declared deceased at the scene.
“The individual was identified as Gray McNeil Vinson, a 33-year-old white male from Greenville. No officers were injured during the incident.
“The case has been turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, which will conduct an independent investigation of the incident. We ask that everyone continue to pray for all those involved and their families during this difficult time.”
