DORIS GIDDENS SAUCER
Oct. 24, 1938 – May 23, 2026
With deep reverence and heartfelt reflection, we honor the life of Doris Giddens Saucer, who peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the age of 87. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ from her youth, Doris’s faith was the radiant light that illuminated her journey and touched all who were blessed to know her.
Born and raised in Greenville, Doris embraced a life of purposeful service and unwavering love. Before completing her studies at Greenville High School, she embarked on a career as a dental assistant, dedicating herself to helping others maintain their health with skill and compassion. Her warm spirit blossomed in her role as a devoted wife and mother. In 1956, Doris and Melvin Saucer united in marriage, a partnership rooted in shared faith and boundless affection. Together, they raised two daughters, Liz and Lisa, nurturing a home filled with laughter, love, and the gentle admonition to “straighten up and fly right as all Saucers do!”
Doris’s heart extended beyond her immediate family. She joyfully embraced the many children who came into her life, especially welcoming Liz’s and Lisa’s dear friend Linda as a cherished third daughter. Her dedication to community was unwavering; from supporting scout troops to working with Weight Watchers, where she touched countless lives with quiet encouragement and a radiant smile, Doris embodied grace in action. Even after retirement, she found renewed purpose in fellowship, embracing new friendships at Knollwood Pointe and becoming a pillar of strength and prayer for those around her.
The tapestry of Doris’s life is threaded with resilience, particularly visible in her courageous battles against breast cancer, fought with steadfast faith and an indomitable spirit. Her victories were sources of inspiration, as she often proclaimed, “You can’t keep a good Saucer down!”
Doris leaves behind a loving legacy through her daughters, Liz Saucer Murphy and Lisa Saucer Thomas (Jack); her treasured grandchildren, Denise Johnston (Jamey), Brianne Harbison, and Crystal Murphy Cobb (Alex); as well as her beloved great-grandchildren, Nicholas Garvin (Abby), Bethany Garvin (fiancé Blake Majors), Madelyn Harbison, Julius “Buddy” Harbison III; and sweet great-great-grandson, baby Grant Garvin. She also is survived by her sister, Ola Mae “Cookie” Bowler; cousin, Lola Jane Callins; and a myriad of nieces and nephews who carry forward her memory.
A celebration of Doris’s rich and cherished life was held on Sunday, May 31, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Dunklin Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. There, friends and family will gather to honor a woman whose faith and love lifted all who knew her. Doris will find her eternal rest beside her beloved Melvin at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.
In every whispered prayer, in every shared smile, Doris Giddens Saucer’s spirit will soar—forever a shining testament to a life beautifully lived, anchored in faith, resilience, and love.
