Tax-free weekend July 17-19

Alabama families can trim their back-to-school budgets when the state’s sales tax holiday returns this weekend on Friday, July 17 through Sunday, July 19.

During the holiday, four categories of back-to-school items are exempt from Alabama’s 4% state sales tax: clothing priced at $156 or less per item, school supplies at $78 or less per item, books at $47 or less, and computers and computer software purchases at $1,173 or less.

A complete list of eligible and ineligible items for sales tax reduction can be found at https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/2026-Back-to-School-Sales-Tax-Holiday-Fact-Sheet.pdf.

Georgiana, Greenville, and McKenzie are participating. Online orders count too, as long as the purchase is completed during the holiday window, by midnight on Sunday, July 19. The same dollar limits apply whether you shop in person or online.

How can you shop smart and save?

Know what’s exempt, and what’s not.

Set your budget first. It’s easy to overspend when everything feels like a deal. Decide what you need, what you’ll spend, and where you’ll shop before you head out.

Buy big-ticket items early. Tax-free computers and other high-demand items can sell out.

Shop local when you can. Small businesses are the backbone of our community.

Use caution online. Pop-up or social media ads that link to a store you don’t recognize are a red flag. Before you enter your payment information, always double check the address bar for the “https” or padlock icon.

Remember what doesn’t qualify. Jewelry, sports equipment, and video games are never tax-exempt, in-person or online.
