Jae’Ques Brown has been elected as the Mayor of Greenville by beating out incumbent Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon in the Tuesday, Sept. 23, municipal runoff election.
Brown gathered 1,387 votes while McLendon collected 969 votes. This makes Brown the first Black Mayor of Greenville.
Brown stated after the election, “Thank you, Mayor Dexter McLendon, for your 24+ years of service to the City of Greenville. Your dedication to this community has been evident through your leadership and the many projects you’ve helped see through. From the growth and development of our bypass area to your fight to ensure our healthcare system remained open for the people of Greenville; your efforts have made a lasting impact on our city. I honor you for the time, energy, and commitment you’ve given to Greenville. As I step into this new role, I will continue to empower the vision of progress for our community, working to build on what has been started while striving to take Greenville to even greater heights. Our people are the heart of this city, and it is together that we will move Greenville forward. Thank you again for your many years of leadership and service to the Best City in Alabama.”
McLendon said after the election, “While it wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, I want to congratulate Jae’Ques Brown on his successful campaign. I wish Mayor-Elect Brown nothing but success as he takes on this role. Serving as Greenville’s mayor and as a councilman has been an honor and a privilege – the greatest job ever serving the people of Greenville and one I didn’t take lightly. Thank you for allowing me to serve this very special place we call home. They say to be successful, you must surround yourself with good people and our city employees are the best! Thank you for all you do! A special thank you goes to my wife Janice, my family, friends, and supporters for all their work during this campaign. Your support means everything to me. The election is over and now it’s time for our great citizens to work together to make our great city the best it can be! It’s the people who make Greenville what it is! Thank you again for allowing me to serve Greenville – the Best Small Town in America!
Brown will be sworn in at the Monday, Nov. 3, Greenville Council meeting
