LIONS HONOR MEMORIAL DAY

On Monday, May 19, people all over the United States observed Memorial Day. Locally, The Greenville Lion’s Club held their annual Memorial Day Celebration at the Greenville High School auditorium with a sizeable crowd in attendance.

The County Road 7 Band provided a selection of music before the official program.

The program began with Lion Nikki McFerrin offering a welcome to those in attendance, followed by John Girdley with the invocation.

The Greenville High School Tiger JROTC Battalion then posted the U.S. Flag and led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lion April Lowery then sang the National Anthem before JROTC posted the service flags.

Lion Hubert Little then gave the ‘Salute to Our Fallen Heroes’ followed by the playing of ‘Taps’ by Jim McGowing.

Next, Little introduced Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jason Godwin as the guest speaker. Godwin spoke to attendees of the meaning of Memorial Day and the locals who left the familiar pines of Butler County for unfamiliar landscapes.

He also talked about his own experiences as part of a medical evacuation team and his own experiences with death and rescue.

After Godwin’s speech, the ‘Recognition of Veterans’ service was held followed by Lowery singing ‘God Bless America,’ and the ‘Walk of Honor’ for veterans.

After the program, everyone one was invited to the cafeteria for lunch.
