The Sasanqua Garden Club held its August meeting at the Ritz Theater with a picnic-themed snack table that included brownies, chocolate bark, nuts, and pimento cheese in phyllo cups with pepper jelly.
A lovely oval arrangement of limelight hydrangeas and zinnias adorned the checkered tablecloth. Hostesses for the month were Tyler Dunklin, Tammi Edwards, Cherry Moseley, and Kathy Pickens.
Club business included finalizing plans to streamline communication within the club, an update on an upcoming excursion to Fairhope, and the continued progress for Beeland Park Camellia Gardens.
To that end the club will continue to sell memorial/honorarium bricks through Aug. 23.
Club member and grant writer, Linda Horn, announced that Sasanqua Garden Club, in partnership with Greenville Chamber of Commerce Foundation and City of Greenville, has been awarded a $70,000 Conservation grant for Beeland Gardens.
A second community development grant, soon to be announced for $35,000, along with matching funds raised by the Club, will complete the $115,000 funds necessary to start this major garden project in October.
Phase One will include pathways and paved areas throughout the garden trails, along with stone columns and commemorative bricks marking the entrance to historic Beeland Gardens.
Additional phases, as described by landscape architect and camellia expert, Bobby Green, at the Soon to Bloom presentation in May, will be added as funds become available.
Future garden elements include a stage area, picnic areas, fountains, an Enchanted Forest, and state of the art identification of the historic native camellias growing within the trails.
The enthusiasm of Sasanqua Garden Club is evident throughout the Camellia City as their beautification efforts enhance our lovely city.
Funding partnerships with local businesses, civic clubs, and local citizens would be welcomed to further the completion of the next phases of Beeland Gardens, a showplace for youth, tourists, and our community to enjoy.
