GMS has substance scare

On Thursday, April 9, officers with the Greenville Police Department (GPD) were called to Greenville Middle School (GMS) in reference to a powdery substance found in possession of a student.

A press release by GPD Police Chief Justin Lovvorn stated, “Other students stated that they were given the powdery substance and ingested it. Some of the students felt sick or had an adverse reaction to the substance.

“Officers seized the powdery substance and contacted the Montgomery Police Department in order to utilize their TrueNarc machine to immediately identify the powdery substance.

“The results were Kool-Aid ingredients with sugar. No illegal or harmful substances were detected in the powdery substance.”

Lovvorn added the GPD and Butler County School Board would continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Butler County School System Superintendent Joe Eiland also issued an update of the situation on Facebook.

He thanked GMS Principal, Ms. Penny Gorum and her staff for the way they responded making certain that every child was given immediate care and parents were informed.

He additional thanked the GPD, Greenville Fire Department, EMT personnel, ambulance service, and the medical staff at Regional Medical Center for their quick and efficient care of students.
