Waters named a Cauthen Fellow

Greenville Standard columnist, Mollie Smith Waters, was recently named a Cauthen Fellow by the Alabama Folklife Association.

Cauthen Fellowships are awarded to individuals to conduct original research on an Alabama folk tradition.

The honor allows Waters to develop her research on the funerary stonemasonry of H. W. Hitchcock.

Waters passion for historical cemeteries and funerary symbolism led to her publishing her first book.

Historic Resting Places of Alabama: Cemeteries and Graveyards Around the State will be available at the April 26th meeting of the Butler County Historical & Genealogical Society.

The Society is hosting a launch party to celebrate the book’s publication at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library at 2 p.m.

BCHGS Vice President for Programs, Melanie Pitts Stonestreet, notes that Mollie will give a presentation at the meeting about her travels searching for the perfect cemeteries and photos to feature in the book followed by a book signing.

Waters teaches American literature, composition, public speaking, theater, and humanities at LBW Community College in Greenville.

Known online as “That Cemetery Lady” she often gives tours of local cemeteries. Waters is also a lecturer for the Alabama Humanities Alliance Roads Scholar Speakers Bureau.

BCHGS President Pamala Nolan invites everyone to attend the celebration of one of the Society’s own members. “We’re all very excited for Mollie and have a special social time planned following the meeting. Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a signed copy of this fabulous book!”
