Breaking Free Color Run May 2

The Reid State Foundation will host the Breaking Free Color Run 5K and Fun Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Evergreen Municipal Park in Evergreen to raise funds for healthy relationship education for Reid State Community College students and local high school students.

The fundraiser will support the second year of Breaking Free, a program that has served well over 200 students this academic year across Conecuh, Escambia, Monroe, and Wilcox Counties.

As program presenter, Ryan Coleman, Reid State Success Coach, has met directly with Reid State Community College students and local high school students, providing education on healthy relationships, warning signs and domestic violence prevention.

Designed to be fun and welcoming for all ages, the color run will combine fitness, community spirit and a meaningful cause.

Participants will run or walk through the course while being showered with bursts of colored powder, creating a bright, high-energy experience for families, students and supporters.

The event is being organized by Juliette Adams, institutional advancement and grants assistant with Reid State, and Coleman.

Coleman, an avid runner, helped inspire the event and suggested adding the color element to make it even more engaging for participants.

“We wanted this to be meaningful, but also something people would genuinely enjoy,” Coleman said. “It is a chance to come together for a fun morning while supporting a program that helps young people better understand what healthy relationships should look like.”

Adams said the event was created to be welcoming to both runners and walkers. “You do not have to be a serious runner to be part of this,” Adams said. “We wanted to create something upbeat and encouraging that brings people together around an important cause. Every registration and donation helps expand this work for students in our communities.”

Breaking Free is supported through funding from the Megan Montgomery Foundation, a grantmaking nonprofit that provides support to high schools, colleges, and nonprofits for healthy relationship education aimed at helping young adults recognize unhealthy behaviors and stop relationship violence before it starts.

Founded in 1989, the Reid State Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises private support for Reid State through scholarships, equipment, programs, capital projects and community partnerships.

Through events, campaigns and donor support, the Foundation helps expand opportunities for students and strengthen the communities Reid State serves.

Registration is available online, and donations are also being accepted through the event website.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals are invited to sponsor the event.
