Guild builds hope from stitches
The Heart of Alabama Quilt Guild is stitching hope into every seam with their latest contribution to a nationwide relief effort.
Guild members recently completed 36 poppy quilt blocks for Hugs from Texas, a grassroots organization supporting communities impacted by the devastating July 4 flooding along the Guadalupe River.
The blocks are part of the “Poppy Block Challenge,” launched by Hugs from Texas founder Connie Kortz, owner of My Fabric Friends.
Her goal is ambitious: collect 35,000 poppy blocks—enough to create 1,000 quilts for families affected by natural disasters.
The challenge officially kicked off on Aug. 30, inviting quilters across the country to join the movement.
Poppy quilt blocks, a beloved design in the quilting world, offer a meaningful way to repurpose leftover fabric, making the project nearly zero waste.
Each block sewn by the Heart of Alabama Quilt Guild carries a message of resilience and compassion, stitched by hands committed to community care.
Kortz began Hugs from Texas last year to aid North Carolina residents recovering from Hurricane Helene.
Today, her mission continues to grow, fueled by the generosity of quilting communities like the one in Alabama.
