On Monday, Jan. 19, the Butler County Civic League (BCCL) hosted their annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Breakfast. The theme of the event was ‘Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.’”
Honorable attendees included mayors from Greenville, Georgiana, and McKenzie, along with Butler County commissioners, and Butler County/Greenville officials.
Dr. Will Boyd, who is running for Governor of Alabama, served as the guest speaker and was welcomed by Rev. Jimmie Thompson, III.
Boyd is a presiding Bishop, pastor, engineer, Christian therapist, educator, author, and public servant.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of South Carolina, an MBA from Regis University, and doctorates in Religion, Psychology, and Organizational Management.
Boyd’s main message was crowd rousing and its theme was one of great service, referring to Dr. Martin Luther King’s statement, “Everbody can be great…Because anybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement from the mid 1950’ until his assassination in 1968. He was the driving force behind the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the march on Washington, DC, which helped bring about the Civil rights act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a US federal holiday.
King was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga., and was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.
